Encounters: Civil society & Cannabis policies

Société civile & politiques du Cannabis.

Geneva, Switzerland – June 2018

Co-hosted by FAAAT think & do tank.

The international dimension of drug regulations is frequently recalled in national debates, to rule out any desire to make significant progress on Cannabis policy. Meanwhile, prohibition entails a lot of suffering and costs for individuals and society: non-access to medical care for patients, repression and stigmatization of users, production and unregulated trade conducive to crime, to name only the most obvious. While our modern societies face profound ecological, economic, health and social challenges, the question of how to regulate a plant so difficult to categorize is the subject of many speculations and desires. From June 4 to 8, for the first time in WHO’s history, the Expert Committee on Drug Dependence began its process of evaluating Cannabis and related products, from a public health perspective (harms and benefits)The recommendations are for the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs which still considers Cannabis and its derivatives at the highest level of control, recognizing no legitimate use. Saturday, June 9, 2018, in the idyllic historical setting of the International Geneva, specialists in health, human rights, research, economics or industry gathered to share information and thoughts on the unique potential of Cannabis/hemp as an indispensable player in our future.
